Did you know that over 133 million people across the world suffer from diabetes and don’t even know it? You could be one of them.

If you’re always urinating and feeling excessively hungry or thirsty, you might be suffering from prediabetes. This disease is on the rise and has become a major contributor of health care costs as a result of diabetic related problems and death.

In order to understand what prediabetes is, we have to take a look at what diabetes is first. The two things you need to know are the roles of glucose and insulin in the human body. Glucose provides energy to all body cells and is the primary source of energy for the body.

Since it is a simple sugar, cells are able to absorb it easily from the bloodstream. As human beings, we get glucose from the food we eat. On the other hand, insulin is produced in the body. It is responsible for regulating the amount of glucose in the body.

Insulin distributes the glucose needed by the body and then stores the excess for times when glucose amounts will be insufficient. When a person suffers from diabetes, their body either produces little to no insulin or is completely resistant to it.

This leads to the cells being unable to absorb the glucose they need to be energized thus leading the body to think that it is hungry. The absence of insulin leads to the rise of blood sugar levels in the body since glucose cannot be converted into energy.

Prediabetis is a condition whereby the blood sugar levels in your body become higher than normal. It is not yet called diabetes but it could end up leading to Type 2 diabetes. If you have prediabetes, there’s no need to worry too much.

There are simple things you can do so that you can prevent the condition from becoming Type 2 diabetes. All you need to do is make several lifestyle changes and you’re good to go. Here are several tips that can help you deal with prediabetes by lowering your blood sugar levels.

1. Get active
One of the major causes of diabetes is obesity. This means that if you’re overweight, you should start doing cardiovascular exercises so that you can shed off the pounds.

Being a couch potato won’t do you any good. Even if you’re not overweight, you should start going to the gym or even having fun exercises with friends or family. Ensure that you stay active throughout the day and walk around, jog or even go for a run to stay healthy.

2. Get enough sleep
Did you know that getting enough sleep during the night helps you lower blood sugar levels? Ensure that you sleep for at least 7 to 8 hours every night to keep your blood sugar levels in check.

3. Eat healthily
Healthy eating will definitely keep your blood sugar levels in check. Eat more high fiber foods like vegetables and fruits. At the same time, keep away from red meat and processed foods or eat them in moderation.

4. Monitor Your Blood Sugar Levels
You should monitor your blood sugar levels regularly to enable you to keep everything in control. A glucometer is a device you can use at home to monitor whether your blood sugar levels are normal or not.

Although diabetes has no cure, it is not a death sentence. You can keep it under control by making healthy lifestyle choices and controlling your sugar intake. This means that you can still enjoy more of life without having to worry about this life-threatening disease.
