Ridesharing hero Shahanaj gets back her bike, ‘thief’ held

The bike of Shahanaj Akhter, a biker who became a social media sensation recently for her struggle to provide for her family by offering ridesharing services, was recovered from Narayanganj early today hours after it was reportedly stolen.

The alleged thief, Zubaidul Islam, has been held and the bike has been recovered from Raghunathpur area in Narayanganj around 3:00am, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division Police Biplob Kumar Sarker said.

Meanwhile, Shahanaj has vowed not to take off her helmet until her only source of income, the bike, is returned to her, Biplob Kumar Sarker said adding that the bike would be handed over to her at a press briefing later in the day.

Zubaidul is a Masters student at English department of Tejgaon College, said Abu Tyab Md Arif, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon division).

According to the general diary filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by Shahanaj, one Jony introduced himself as a driver of a ridesharing service, and promised to avail her full-time employment after Shahanaj's story was published in Bangla daily Prothom Alo few days back.

He met the person yesterday, and after driving around the city for a while, was having a cup of tea with him in Khamarbari area. He wanted to test-ride the scooter and she gave it to him. Jony took off with the ride, she said in the GD.

The struggle of Shahanaj, a single mother of two daughters, came to the limelight when her story was posted on Facebook by online activist Rafiuzzaman Sifat. The post has been shared nearly 10,000 times, with many hailing her courage and determination.
