Shabana Azmi plays a mom in The Black Prince, a biopic on Punjab’s last king

The first trailer of Shabana Azmi’s film, Black Prince, was revealed at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. The trailer has already garnered more than a million views within 48 hours of its launch on YouTube.

The Black Prince is a biopic on the last King of Punjab, Maharajah Duleep Singh, his relationship with Queen Victoria and his struggle to reclaim his throne during Britain’s occupation of India.

The film is produced by Brillstein Entertainment Partners - the production house that also produced Academy Award-winning film 12 Years A Slave.

Sufi singer, composer and song-writer, Satinder Sartaaj, who makes his acting debut with The Black Prince where he plays the titular role.

Asked for his views on the Kohinoor controversy and whether it was gifted or stolen from the young Prince, Satinder Sartaaj said in a press statement, “Was it a gift or was it a theft is the question we all had.

In the movie, there is a particular scene where The Black Prince looks at Queen Victoria with the Kohinoor on her. She quickly fires back saying it is a gift repeatedly in a defensive manner. We left it at that and it is for the audience to judge.”

The Black Prince comprises an ensemble of leading stars. Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch) , English stage, screen actress Amanda Root (The Iron Lady), who portrays the bold role of Queen Victoria; and veteran actress Shabana Azmi (City of Joy) as Rani Jindan, the exiled King’s mother. The film also features Keith Duffy, David Essex OBE, Canadian actor Rup Magon in supporting roles.

The Black Prince releases internationally on July 21.
