Lemon, the small yellow citrus fruit from the flowering plant family Rutaceae, is believed to be first grown in Assam, Northeast India. Then it travelled to Europe and region in the world, according to history.

Although the origin of the name is traced to Old French word Limon, it evolved over the years from Italian to Arabic, Persian and finally Sanskrit word nimbu, as it is called in Hindi in India and Pakistan.

In ancient times, there was no report of the fruit being cultivated for domestic consumption. Probably, owing to its medicinal properties and health benefits, its popularity spread and became a household name, especially in India, which tangy traditional drink – nimbu pani is a favourite of all. And the fruit juice is added as flavour in most Indian foods and used in several dishes across the country.

Lemon is rich in Vitamin C, dietary fibre and Vitamin B6. It also contain small amounts of calcium, thiamin,riboflavin, pantothenic acid, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.
