EWOEM gets Tk 560 cr in FY 2016-2017

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith today announced the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2016-17 allocating Taka 560 crore for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry (EWOEM).

“We are working on reducing the migration cost, ensuring transparency and accountability in the activities of recruiting agencies, preventing illegal migration, and ensuring safe migration,” the minister said while presenting the budget in the Jatiya Sangasd. 

Muhith said the government has formulated drafts of the Labour Migration Management Rules, 2016, Recruiting Agents’ Conduct and License Rules, 2016, Migrant Workers’ Welfare Fund Rules, 2016 and Migrant Workers’ Registration Rules, 2016 with a view to generating overseas employment and ensuring welfare of the expatriates. “We expect to finalize these rules soon,” he hoped.

The allocation has been made for both development and non-development heads of the ministry. The proposed allocation for the ministry is Taka 122 crore higher than the budget of the outgoing fiscal. The allocation for the ministry in the fiscal 2015-2016 was Taka 438 crore.
