A rape accused was killed in what the law enforcers called a gunfight at Amirabad in Lohagara upazila early Monday.
The deceased was Saiful Islam, owner of a coaching centre, and an accused in a case filed over raping a Class-IX student. He had been on the run since the case was filed against him two weeks back.
Tipped off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive in the area around 4:30am, said Md Mashkur Rahman, assistant director (media) of RAB-7.
Sensing presence of the elite force members, Saiful opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.
After the gunfight, the RAB team recovered Saiful's body from the spot.
On 12 April, Saiful reportedly tied up the hands and legs of the girl and raped her in absence of his family members.
A case was then filed against him.
