Dhaka girl dies in Cox’s Bazar

An english medium student from Dhaka has died in Cox’s Bazar during a trip with friends one of whom has been arrested by police.

The deceased, Swarna Rashid, 21, was residing in Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar, according to media report.

The daughter of a businessman was preparing for A Level tests.

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station Inspector Mohammad Khairuzzaman said her friends took her to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital on Friday evening when she fell ill.

Quoting family members, Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station SI Md Sharif Ullah said Swarna along with her 10-11 friends came to Cox’s Bazar on Friday morning.

She informed her family about going to her maternal uncle's house instead of Cox's Bazar. On arrival, the group checked in Hotel Zaman.

A source in the hotel said after visiting the sea beach, all the youngsters started taking Yaba pills in a room in the evening.

After sometime, Swarna fell unconscious due to overdose of the drugs, according to the source.

She was taken to the emergency unit of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, but soon went back to her room after taking first aid.

Dr Shaheen Abdur Rahman, RMO of the hospital, said, "Swarna was admitted to the hospital after giving first aid. But, she left for the hotel telling us to go back to Dhaka.”

“The girl was again brought to the hospital at about 9.30 pm, but, by that time she had died. She died from overdose of Yaba pills,” he added.

All the friends of Swarna fled the hospital when the doctors declared her dead to police.

However, police detained Wali Ahmed Khan, one of the Swarna’s friends.
