Suicide trend among women on the rise in Sylhet

Suicide trend among the women of Bishwanath upazila in the district is increasing day by day. At least six including five women committed suicide in the upazila on last February and March.

Family feuds, social uncertainty, mistrust, love affairs, decay of moral values, and uncontrolled emotion are the main reasons of the increasing rates of suicide, police sources said.   

Unable to tolerate husband’s torture, Rahima Begum, 38, wife of Amir Ali of Rampasha Dokhhinpara village committed suicide by hanging herself with the ceiling on February 7.

Sima Begum, 17, daughter of Abdul Motin committed suicide by hanging herself at Doshpakai village under Daulotpur union in the upazila on February 1.

Unable to tolerate deceive of boyfriend, Taslima Khanam Rima, 16, a college girl committed suicide by hanging herself with ceiling in the upazila on February 16.

She was a student of Sylhet Moin Uddin Ideal Women College, and also Health Affair Secretary of Upazila Awami League unit and daughter of Shahanur Hossain of Bidyapoti village under Lamakazi union here.

Raman Khan, 27, son of Rahmat Khan, committed suicide at Zahargao village in the upazila on February 21.

Shirina Begum, 40, wife of UK expatriate Masuk Miah committed suicide by hanging herself at Naogao Purbopara village in the upazila on March 2.

Nur Jahan Siddiqua Rima, 25, wife of Saudi expatriate Jalal Hossain committed suicide by hanging herself with ceiling fan at Shaban Tonga village of the upazila on March 12.

Decay of moral values, foreign cultural aggression, social uncertainty, deceive, mistrust, love affairs, family feuds, and over emotion are the reason behind high trend of suicide, said concerned of civil society.

They assumed that only by enriching social awareness, family relations, and practice of moral values can discourage the social crisis. 

Separate unnatural death cases were filed with the police station in those connection, said Shamsuddoha, officer-in-charge of Bishwanath Police Station.
